Arson attack suspected near Glastonbury after fire destroys derelict hospital

A derelict hospital near Glastonbury was destroyed in a suspected arson attack in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Dozens of firefighters braved high winds throughout the night at the hospital site in Butleigh attempting to stop the blaze from spreading.

First reports of the fire were made shortly after midnight on Wednesday when flames were spotted in the west wing of the derelict building, which closed in 2005.

Specialist units from across the county were called in as conditions worsened and the fire spread.

At least a quarter of the building was destroyed by the blaze.

Fire Investigation Officers are currently carrying out a full inspection and it is already believed that the once much-loved facility was deliberately set alight.
