GEMS Scrapstore & Play Resource Centre, a charity which is based in Wells, has added another string to their bow.

The Scrapstore provides a range of resources and materials to the community, which has been collected as waste from local businesses and is destined for landfill sites.

This waste, which can include fabric, card, paper, foam, foil, plastic pots, tubes, nettings and all kinds of weird and wonderful stuff - is made available to the community at low cost. Members include schools, children's centres, community groups and families.

Now, the Scrapstore has joined the national Community RePaint initiative, on behalf of Mendip. This means that businesses such as tradepeople and paint manufacturers can donate their unwanted household paint to the Scrapstore to be passed on at low cost to the community. Sponsored by Dulux and supported by companies such as Homebase and Farrow and Ball, the RePaint scheme aims to reduce the amount of paint which is dumped at landfill, often through trade waste and at recycling centres.

"This is yet another fantastic opportunity we can offer our community" said Scrapstore manager Laura Kavanagh.

"We offer full and half filled tins of emulsion, gloss, undercoat etc at just £1.50 a litre. Often, this paint has never been opened or used and is in perfect condition. It is fantastic for a school or group who want to re-vamp a classroom or communal area or for a family who need some paint for a project at home. We recently had a pallet load of 700 litres of top-end paint which was classed as seconds because the tins were dented or labels creased. The savings are amazing."

The scheme is available to all members of the Scrapstore, with membership starting at just £10 a year for individuals. For more information visit the Scrapstore Website or telephone 01749 938112.
