Glastonbury Frost Fayre, the annual Christmas extravaganza filled to the brim with seasonal splendour, is taking place this weekend.

Possibly the most anticipated event on Glastonbury's Christmas calendar, this year's Frost Fayre takes place on Saturday 15 December and has plenty on offer for the whole family to enjoy.

Kicking off the day's festivities will be carols sung by the United Church Choir outside St John's church at 11.30am, followed by Lydia's Drums at Market Cross, who will announce the opening ceremony at the Melodrome Stage.

At 12 noon the Fayre will be officially declared open by The Mayor and special guest; Harry Potter actor Edward Tudor Pole.

This should hopefully have everyone in the spirit for the rest of the day's seasonal celebrations which include live performances from the Melodrome Stage all day.

Other Frost Fayre highlights include an open air market, performances from talented buskers and live entertainers and Children's World at the top of the High Street.

Glastonbury Abbey will be getting into the festive spirit and have invited Santa Claus himself to set up his Grotto in the Abbot's Kitchen.

A pony and trap will bring Santa's visitors to the large double gates at the top of the Abbey, dropping them off near the Abbot's Kitchen which will be lit up by a trail of tea-lights. All children visiting Santa will receive a present.

As well as Father Christmas's Grotto, the Abbey will have a choir singing Christmas carols and a brass band. Children will also be able to enjoy a 'decorate your own Christmas tree biscuit' session, while parents can enjoy mulled cider and a mince pie.

A Willow lantern parade is to be the enchanting climax of the day's proceedings. The candles will be lit at 4pm and the glowing trail of lanterns will make their way from the Abbey to Glastonbury recreational ground (Abbey Park) where a surprise is being organised.

Shoppers can also enjoy late night shopping in the centre of Glastonbury until 8pm.
