New manager Simon White declared himself delighted with his squad's battling spirit after his first game in charge of Glastonbury Town ended in a 2-1 home defeat, writes Merv Colenutt.

Cutters Friday were the weekend victors, becoming the sixth team to beat Glastonbury in successive matches. Despite his frustration in defeat, White saw plenty of signs to suggest a return to winning ways might not be far away.

"I was very pleased because it was a fairly good team performance but I'm obviously not happy with the result," said White.

"We did okay and I was very pleased with the battling spirit that we showed against a very good side.

"We challenged for every ball. That was important as we made life difficult them."

The Dollies have endured a difficult campaign and currently sit bottom of the Somerset County League Premier Division table. Previous management duo Roy Winter and Paul Dowden stepped down from their roles two weeks ago but returned to the backroom staff following White's appointment last week.

Although his side face a tough task to avoid relegation this season, White is confident the squad have the ability to turn their fortunes around.

"The team is not as bad as the league table suggests," he said. "We know there are areas we need to improve and one of the most obvious is to cut out the mistakes that are costing us goals.

"If we can stop giving goals away we will be in a much better position as we are always likely to score at least once. It's not rocket science and I am certain that we have the ability to adapt.

"We need to polish up on a few things and I will do what I can to take the pressure off the players."

Glastonbury have no fixture this weekend but White is expected to hold a training session with the first-team squad on Saturday.
