Residents evacuated after blaze at Glastonbury Care Home

A fire broke out in a Brunelcare nursing home in Glastonbury yesterday afternoon.

Staff and residents were quickly evacuated from the building when alarms went off in the loft of Glastonbury Care Home, Pike Close, yesterday afternoon.

Fire crews from Glastonbury, Street and Wells responded quickly to a call from staff at the care home and arrived on the scene at 5.25 pm.

This is the second time in ten months that fire-crews have been called out to the Glastonbury Care Home.

The loft space was filled with smoke and fire crews used four sets of breathing apparatus on people affected and two CO2 extinguishers to ensure the staff and residents' safety.

After locating the source of the smoke with thermal imaging cameras, the crews extinguished the blaze, which was determined to have been caused by a light fitting and cables that had become unsafe.

The fire was confirmed to be accidental.

Last November fire crews were called to the same nursing home at 1 am due to a blazing toaster.

The Kitchen suffered smoke damage and several of the residents had to be evacuated from the building.

A spokesperson for Brunelcare said: "Everyone at the Glastonbury Care Home was OK and uninjured after yesterday's incident.

"All of our staff have had strict training on general fire safety so they knew exactly how to handle a situation like that.

"There was no lasting damage done to the property after the fire."
