Wintry conditions finally hit Glastonbury

The extreme wintry weather conditions we have been warned to expect over the past week finally hit Glastonbury and the West Country today.

Glastonbury in the snow
After a frightfully cold night and a chilly but pleasantly bright but nippy morning, the snow started to descend on us shortly after 12.30pm, and it wasn't long before it started to settle. While the main roads weren't suffering too much, I took a drive around some of the local b-roads on the outskirts of Glastonbury and they were very slippery in places. On the Butleigh road cars were skidding a bit and a Mercedes estate in front of us misjudged a turning and slid into a bank despite travelling at a very modest speed, while on the roads around Godney and Polsham the road was totally covered in a blanket of white.
As is often the case we have so far been hit less severely than many other parts of the country, and as far as I can tell the bitterly cold temperature in this area should rise. Overnight the sleet and snow should be moving south eastwards although the mist and fog will be slow to clear tomorrow morning. Early indications suggest that rain may arrive in Somerset by tomorrow afternoon, and by the beginning of next week the weather should be getting much milder.
