I have an allotment, though I am guilty of neglecting it as don;t always get the time to tend to it consistently. I'm givig myself one more season with it before I give it up if it's too much again, as it's not fair to keep it from others that would make use of it. Can anyone else tell me how much time they put in to their allotments to keep on top of it in the summer months?

I want to build some raised beds and am trying to negotiate a collection of wood from my builder friend which is proving to be something of a military style operation. Our allotment is in a pretty sorry state as we had little success last year in maintaining it but have mulched most of it in order to restrict the weed growth and I'm now about to uncover the lot and position raised beds with mulched walkways in between.

We also have the shed to paint and other beds to dig too - I'm determined to have a good year of this year, it's such a brilliant opportunity and so rewarding!

We built some raised beds today!  Had a fabulous afternoon, working  in the rain  - and I'm being serious, it was incredibly rewarding, once we got over the fact that we were going to get soaking wet and covered in mud, we took warm clothes a big flask of tea and set to work. By the end of the afternoon we had built three beds using some reclaimed decking wood from a friend and are feeling truly inspired now to tidy up the rest of the plot.

I am trying to source the best compost to dig in to the beds now. Have some rotted horse manure but no sure if will need somethig else too? Any advice?

Am now eagerly looking forward to planning what we are going to grow, off to get my gardening books.....

Am really into the allotment at the moment, now we have some kind of organised plot with our raised beds, and have actually managed to also dig a small potato patch. Now have our seedlings on the go, Earthfare in the high street sell quite a good range of organic heirloom seeds, I'm determined to get a good crop of winter squash this year.

I see there is talk of selling the allotments near the bypass. We must make sure that they are replaced.

That would be outrageous; some old boys spend most of their lives down there, and their patches are immaculate - makes it easy for me to pilfer a few leeks and onions when my pension needs to be eeked out a bit more.

The Town Council - upstairs at the town hall in Magdalene Street is the place to ask for the  allotments opposite Becks.  I believe the contact number is 01458 831769.  There is normally a waiting list but worth asking, you never know.
