ReportYesterday morning through our door, came a simpering, obsequious pamphlet which informed me, of how much this community needs Tesco’s, it informed how many jobs it’s going to create in the community and what benefits there will be to farming families, workers and the environment. Well as far as I’m concerned they can **** off. I have admittedly shopped at a Tesco in the past, but I have had enough of them, for I really do believe that Tesco's growth is the draining life out of communities. Many years ago I remember that Tesco’s, and there Ilk, ran initial campaign pitches which told us of how Supermarkets make shopping easier, convenient with cheaper prices, and all under one roof. Well on the last point, how do we know what’s cheaper any more; there is no competition except for the other big supermarkets. I reckon that if someone had the time and inclination, to go down many high streets in the UK, which has a major supermarket, and try to find a locally run/Family Grocer, Fishmonger, Butcher, Baker they would be ****** hard pushed to do so. For there is no doubt, that today these smaller independents cannot survive the impact these supermarkets are making. And as a result the competition is gone. Last week, Pixie and i set out on a mission, to find an economical Sunday dinner we drove around the local areas stopping outside houses which had little stalls selling surplus veg with honesty boxes on them, we found and bought a fair sized bag of New potatoes £1 (used for two meals, A cabbage 50P (contributed to two meals) A bunch of carrots 75p (the uses was an endless list) an 2 onions and some parsnips for 50p, so for £2.75 i think we did well and there wasn’t a Supermarket in sight. Tesco’s profits for last year was reported as £3.1Bn if my calculations are correct, this equates to £5898 per minute or £353880 per hour (give or take a couple of quid) and still people starve to death world wide.
also.........I originate the Lancashire. When I was a child my family were friends with a family who were quite a well known bread producer and bakery, who employed many local people and who also bought quite a lot of their produce locally. Believe me they baked absolutely beautiful bread. Eventually the family was approached by Mr Tesco and during the meeting that followed, Mr Tesco stated (I cannot remember the exact figures used...So I will give examples) that they needed, say 10,000 loaves of bread per week, the family explained that they would need to up production and acquire some new machinery, but it was achievable, and told Mr Tesco that they could produce at Say £0.50p per loaf, Mr Tesco apparently laughed and said that that was not how it worked, and that Tesco set the price of what was going to be paid and which would be £0.20p per unit, the exasperated family told Mr Tesco that they couldn’t produce at that price. Mr Tesco told them that were the deal and that, as there were so many other quality producers in the locality; Tesco’s would generously give the family 48 hours to decide. Consequently they had to accept the deal or risk going out of business, jobs were cut and quality deteriorated, i was up and till a few years ago still in contact with this family and the amount of pressure they were under from Mr Tesco’s demanding and tantrums when dead lines are not met has had a devastating effect on this family which is now split into many factions. Tesco say they are investing in Glastonbury, anybody who invests expects a return, anybody who invests expects to call the shots. Why do we need a 4 Tesco stores in 6 mile radius? Plus Morrison’s and a Sainsbury’s also they say it will create jobs. Believe me if they open at Glastonbury they will close the smaller store in Street leaving an impact on that area and staff there will or should and quite rightly so be redeployed to Glastonbury which is no bigger than Wells
I see the anti-Glastonbury Tesco clan have been beavering away feverishly and updating their blog:

Or maybe not!!!
Hopefully when the Co-op refurb in the High Street is complete there will be a decent supermarket to go to.

I just don't feel happy that £1 in every£8 - 12% of the countrys money goes through Tesco it is just too much of a monopoly for one firm to have. I shall continue to use Morrisons it is a shame that they can't find a better use for the Moorland Lack of Enterprise Park
