On Saturday 19th January, Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque inspired psych-folk band Circulus will headline an evening of songs and pieces on an Early Music theme at the Assembly Rooms, with appearances from various guest musicians before their headline set later in the evening. This special concert begins a series of monthly gigs throughout the winter and spring organised and hosted at the Assembly Rooms by Circulus - who are now Glastonbury residents - with guest appearances from early music specialists and psych-folk performers of their acquaintance, both local and from further afield. Since the 1960's - and before - Glastonbury has been a focal point for artists, musicians and poets: recently taking up residence are Michael Tyack, lutenist, cittern player, guitarist and leader of Circulus, and virtuoso baroque violinist and multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Bennett. Michael and Jennifer are a versatile duo known in both the popular and classical music worlds, and recently featured on Radio 3's "In Tune" afternoon programme playing medieval songs and pieces. Circulus, whose various albums and festival appearances have won them much critical acclaim, and who appeared recently on the Culture Show on BBC2, will play with an array of ancient and modern instruments including viola da gamba, flute, cello, Moog synthesizer, violin, guitar and lutes. The latest Circulus line-up also includes synth player Ollie Parfitt and Glastonbury multi-instrumentalist Harmony Davies. The future Assembly Rooms dates, all Saturdays, are booked for February 23rd, March 16th, April 13th and May 18th. Admission only £5; doors open at 8 p.m. with guests preceding the main act at around 10 p.m. For further information, contact Glastonbury Assembly Rooms on 01458 834677.
