"What Royal Wedding?" says Glastonbury

There are just a few days to go until Kate and William’s “Big Day” yet here in Glastonbury town there really is very little evidence of any proposed celebration for the couple.   There are no flags flying, no bunting in evidence and even though the wedding takes place at Westminster Abbey on Friday there’s not much in the way of Souvenirs - tacky or otherwise - in our local shops.

I’ve scanned the local papers, checked the local noticeboards etc. and there doesn’t seem to be a lot going on there either.  Meanwhile Mendip Council advise us that there have been no applications for wedding parties in Glastonbury (nor even for a street party in Street), and unless someone takes up Prime Minister David Cameron’s advice and organises a last minute illegal rave (at least I think that’s what he suggested) it appears to be a bit of a non-event all round.

I’ve been chatting to a few people around town over the past few days and it seems that many locals just aren’t interested in the pomp and ceremony and are more interested in finding venues where they can avoid it.  A quiet pub with a beer garden and no plasma TV seems to be a favourite idea (assuming the weather is clement).

For those wishing to buck the local trend, I have managed to find two local and free events that take place the day.   At St Benedict’s Church in Benedict Street is a traditional Royal Wedding Tea Party running from 2pm until 4pm with Fancy Dress for all ages, face painting, children's entertainment, games and activities.  There’ll be a toast to the newlyweds as well as homemade sandwiches, cakes, scones and even a wedding cake.  On Friday evening from 8pm, the Rifleman’s Arms is hosting an Alternative Wedding (Fancy Dress) Party with music from Bristol-based electro-dance band Oui Ja Yes, and support from Glastonbury based House of Commoners.

If you have any interesting plans for celebration lined up for Friday, or even if you know of a great getaway idea, let us know below.

Personally, I'm waiting for someone to post details of the Islamic Republican party in town for that day.
