Move To Glastonbury? Come On In, The Water's Fine!

I want to cry. The four bedroom, three storey house in central Glastonbury that I rented just over a decade ago and had the opportunity to buy for £60K, has just been sold for a smidge under £255K. Gutted. It was a beautiful house, great location and a lovely atmosphere, or 'vibe' as some may be inclined to say. My friend and I, with whom I shared the house, toyed with the idea of a joint mortgage, but she ended up moving in with her boyfriend and I couldn't manage the mortgage by myself on the meagre salary I was then earning. My partner was already tied into a mortgage with his ex, and so my lovely house ended up being sold to another lucky person and I moved out.

Never mind. I cannot lament the loss of such a nice place forever, though the nigh-on £200K hike in price is a slightly bitter pill....but then I guess it's not so different from my current property situation and that of many others. My partner and I did eventually manage to buy our place a couple of years later in what felt like seconds before property prices went through the roof and we have subsequently seen the value of our property treble.

Glastonbury is a popular place in Somerset to buy property. When I peruse the estate agents windows and websites, I see that prices in and around Glastonbury are comparitively, not as reasonable as those in nearby Street and Shepton Mallet. Not quite as expensive as Wells properties it seems, but nonetheless, moving to Glastonbury is not as cheap as one might think. While the draw for many is based on the esoteric and enigmatic charm of the town, the spiritual draw and history for others, undoubtedly the infamous festival has had some influence in raising the profile of this place.

So would you like to move to Glasto? Are you yearning for a bolt-hole in this magnificent, eclectic, unique place where you can escape the rat race and unwind for a few days to work on your chakra? Or do you long to relocate the entire family to enjoy what the town has to offer while reaping the benefits of beautiful countryside on your doorstep? With the benefit of the M5 close-by, schools such as Millfield just down the road and an abundance of arts, culture and great local attractions, and unlimited spring water flowing freely from the Chalice Well, it has a lot to offer. With the exception of good rail links. But you can't have everything, so if you're feeling tempted, properties for sale in Glastonbury town this week include a two bed victorian town house with garden backing onto Chalice Hill for £169,950, a detached four bed house with seperate annex and on an elevated position close to the town centre for £367,500 or a one bed leasehold apartment off of the high street for £89,950. See you soon!

In 1996 Martin, I didn't have a single clue about the internet - I remember hearing about it, knew people that 'used' it and frankly, I didn't get it. I had a PC installed in my home, as had to work from home at times and a friend persuaded me that have internet access was sensible. That was in about 2000...I have some friends who were in on the world wide web from the very early days, and have since made good money selling original dmain names and through other web based enterprise by being in on the act from the start. Similarly, some have developed many 'free' websites for community groups which have gone on to become so successful, they've managed to earn money through advertising revenue and sponsorship.

Ha ha, sorry if it feels like that Martin! No, it's not being run by property 'professionals', we just thought it would be interesting to get some opinions on the town for people that may be researching what the market is like here. I've lived in Glast town for 13 years now, so just offering my views / opinions, for what it's worth! Have you been in Glastonbury for very long?

Is this list being run by professionals in the property sales market?

It feels like it.  Ramping up property values; bigging up the attractions of the place -- is theis *really* a chat forum; or just an extension of somebody's town business?

If so, it's a sad comment on the way the internet is going.

There's no train service around here, and public transport can be poor, but it doesn't really matter if you have a combine harvester.
