Biodiversity in spotlight

In the spirit of Bug Month, organised by EDF Energy, schoolchildren have been unearthing fascinating facts and doing their bit for bugs.
Throughout March pupils from Crispin School in Street, Meare Village Primary School near Glastonbury and the Cathedral School in Wells have been encouraged to learn more about biodiversity.
The children got involved in a variety of activities including research on insect habitats, writing bug-related poems and even designing and building shelters – ‘bug hotels’ – from natural and recycled materials.
Robyn Broughton, the school programme manager for EDF Energy, said: “Bug Month is a great initiative that gets schoolchildren excited and engaged in biodiversity.
“Conserving local ecosystems and natural habitats is very important. These activities allow children the chance to embrace green issues whilst getting close to nature.”
This initiative was created and run by The Pod, the energy company’s online schools programme, a group that now contains over 11,500 schools.
Their aim is to educate pupils about sustainability and climate change.
