A Glastonbury primary school has received a top award for their commitment to arts.

It is the second time that St John’s Infant School in Glastonbury has achieved the Artsmark award, in recognition of its excellence in arts education.

Head teacher Wendy Turner said: “I’m delighted that the Arts Council has recognised St John’s dynamic arts education programme.

“This year our children have really enjoyed working with a local ‘willow’ artist to design and make a willow shelter and a willow horse; all the children worked together with an artist to make a mural for our playground and our library.

“The children have also experienced working with a specialist dance practitioner, from ‘Mean Feet’ Dance Company, who has delivered a variety of contemporary dance styles.

“The dance sessions have also encouraged team work and developed communication skills.

“We have also developed our provision for drama this year and have used the expertise of our school subject leader, to develop skills in drama across the school. ‘Artsmark’ is more than simply a mark of distinction to us; taking part in the scheme has enabled us to develop our arts provision, and see the children who take part become more self-confident, engaged and excited about learning.”
